“Coffee” (a poem by Stuart Vance & KPKeelan)

.

Go ahead!
Look deep into your own reflection
on the black surface
of your espresso.

(“Oh God, it’s good!”)

Somehow
being penniless and creative
didn’t turn out
to be as romantic as we thought it would…

(“Well- almost…”)

The brew is good today,
but there’s a frog in me.
He feels like peanut butter!

Afghanistan is in my coffee,
I can see the Soviet soldiers
with their burly eyebrows aflutter
playing canasta
on dusty highways
the sun
burning their ears.

But…
it’s only coffee.
