FLIX PIX (673): “MIDNIGHT is a Frothy Screwball Delight!”

MIDNIGHT

(directed by Frank R. Strayer, 1931)
***** (out of 5)

.

> MIDNIGHT is another utterly delightful screwball comedy from the director who brought us the sublime EASY LIVING.

. A sassy Claudette Colbert, a roguish Don Ameche, an unctuous Mary Astor and a woozy John Barrymore just shine in this Cinderella story about a young woman trying to make it after being stranded in the big city of Paris. Charles Brackett and Billy Wilder penned this classic romance, about a working class woman pretending to be a high-society duchess while being pursued by the cabby she seems destined for, even if she seems in denial about it.

. Even though the central romance was sadly truncated and underdeveloped, and required a leap of faith that was just a bit too far, this was an absolute classic from Hollywood’s Golden Age that deserves a spot in your film queue. The final courtroom scene where the couple that has never been married seek a divorce, was just a blast!

. Why don’t they make films like this anymore?

– I’ll bet Paul Thomas Anderson could make a film like this…
