Poems of a Young Man: “MY FIRST POEM IN SEVERAL MONTHS” (for Tammy)

Winter has left her calling card.
Outside, bitter cold
but inside me I am warm
and cozy with you.

What is it to be alive?
A parade of moments?
A succession of instants?

Being alive with you is making me
proud to be human.

These tender moments,
these vulnerable connections
will always be a part of me now.

This is for you.

Clearly, I am inspired!
A little scared
and challenged.

What is illusion? What is not?
Can I ever forget
your haunting question:

“What do you see in my eyes?”

What did you want me to see:
a secret, hidden in your heart
or the desire burning in my own?

I will never know.

5 AM cuddling on the couch
in the stillness of a chilly sleeping house
we touched in a way we never have
and you asked
that question that will never stop
ringing in my ears.
