OCTOBER 12, 1980 (“Low Tide”)


The backwash of inspiration

leaves me

uncertain I’m alive.


If it weren’t for this

persistent physical pain,

I would call the matter


 the toss of a coin.

This is one of 367 poems I wrote every day of 1980. Some are so marginal, they are almost embarrassments now. I resisted the impulse to rewrite the stinkers to preserve the breathtaking naivety and arrogance of youth that characterize these works. Among the plaintive, painfully self-aware cries of a lost manchild adrift, there are occasional gems that I read now with a mix of astonishment and delight. The more things change …
