“The Crucible of Possibility” (a poem by KPKeelan)

A perfect precious baby is born

brought into this world pregnant with possibility.

Who will she be?

What will her life be like?

Will she fulfill

that slumbering possibility

inherent in a human life,

or be dragged down by chains of ignorance?

How will her true nature be thwarted,

her uniqueness quashed?

What roadblocks will be thrown in her path?

When will she first learn

At what point compromise?

Capable of so much,

we come to expect so little.

Birds on the wings of youth,

we shrink as the years decay.

Imaginations once boundless,

are constrained to a peapod.

Failing to dream

we forget who we are

and become mirages of ourselves.

Must this be?
