“Commodities” (a poem by Kevin Keelan)

America is a corporation

selling denial by the ton.
Such bargain rates-

it’s a clearance sale!

Fleshy fodder for government grist

Patriots and Optimists must die!

They are excess baggage-

useful to no one!

they have IDEAS,

and ideas cannot be commodified.

Everything is a product

placed in a pretty package

for sale to a clueless buyer.

But who can buy now?

The Robber Barons will not bankroll

anyone but bankers.

King Cash has been stripped of its cache,

demoted to paltry peasant.

Credit is King now.

So the 1% makes loans to the 1%.

Everything has a cost;

nothing has a value.

Brother, can you spare a loan?

Do you have an offshore tax shelter we can use?
