“The Dichotomy of Fate” (a poem by KPKeelan)

Gazing into this gauzy mirror

I must wonder:

Who am I:

The Observer,

or The Observed?

Am I

the man watching Me

or the man being Me?

High atop this ivory tower

sits The Judge

watchful eye cast firmly on me

seeing and evaluating my every move,

thought, action,

a bemused smirk tattooed

to his sour puss.

He is me, but not me

fair, but unfair.

Detached, like God-in-the-clouds

he offers approval,

reproach, ridicule.

Pretending to have no say in things

he abdicates responsibility,

dropping it all

on my shoulders.

When it’s all done

and I finish my final breath,

will I be the disembodied Reader

weeping faded memories into

my Book of Life-

or will I be revealed as the Book?
