“Worshipping the Vicious God of Hate” (a poem by KPKeelan)

(a love letter to the Catholic Church)

Every minute I spent in church

left a scar on my living soul.

I was admonished to shut up,

accept without question,

stand up sit down stand up!

I absorbed the veneration of torture,

the invocation of same-

taught the fear of thought,

the everpresent sin of my body,

encouraged to cannibalism

with flesh crackers

and blood wine.

I listened in horror

to tales of hatred and vengeance,

studied those stained glass tableaux

of murder and death

as I was told to believe in

magic and miracles.

And in the background of history

the blind ritual of hate marched on,

as armies of righteous crusaders

rolled over the globe

making grist of human beings,

oppressed the poor, the ignorant, all women,

slaughtering wantonly for God.

I heard the echoes of their screams

spewing like vomit

from the mouths of “holy” men,

recoiled in my bed

at dreams of eternal damnation,

seeing innocents writhing in flame

with wide red eyes of terror-

saw the evil,

the hypocrisy made sacred.

Said nothing, I was silent.

The innocent silence of a child.

Silence no more!
