> Wow! This film noir is as good as any Hollywood film I have ever seen! So glad I finally got around to it. It is the ultimate definition of the word “classic”.
. Bogie and Bacall are sheer dynamite here. Their chemistry is so fiery their offscreen romance comes as no surprise to the viewer. Bacall was so poised for such a young actress- and that voice! Fantastic.
. Playing an innocent man escaped from jail to clear his name, Bogart is not seen at all in the early part of the film, bringing to mind the similarly classic LADY IN THE LAKE. We only see his craggy, world-weary face after the character receives plastic surgery to keep the cops at bay. The acting Bogart does under a bandaged face that only reveals his soulful eyes is absolutely extraordinary.
. If you missed this one- rush out and GET IT. The acting, script, production values are all first-rate and it is just a hoot to watch!
