“My Life in a Nutshell” (a poem by KPKeelan)

Pulling on these taut reins

Hellbent for eternity

I can’t get there fast enough.

Burning for Love! Burning for Life!

The wick flickers,

bright vision fades…

I tug! I pull! I yank!

Heaving this heavy chain

over hunched shoulders

I hotfoot to Hell.

going… going… going…

Yearning painfully for the next moment

and the next

and the next,

grieving for the now.

Yes, I am stillborn,

dragging this empty chariot

to a blinding horizon

that races toward me

like a dawning sun.

Tides of muscle ripple.

A milky film of sweat

stings my eyes.

I see the great mirror-

smash it,

crave my own lost reflection

in unblinking eyes.

I careen

like a wild man

drunk on my own breath-

into the closing iris

of Goodbye.
