“This is Amerika! (From Columbine to Newtown)” (a poem by KPKeelan)

*

This is Amerika:

A cowboy nation

Of imaginary superheroes

Craving security

Drowning in denial

Thriving on bloodshed!

This is Amerika:

Malnourished populace

Gorging on a smorgasbord of fear

Nurturing a culture of violence

Giving to those who have

Taking from those who need!

This is Amerika:

Playactors pretending

Guns will keep us free

Ears stopped shut

Hearing only the echo chamber within

Placing dogma before Truth!

This is Amerika:

An adolescent nation stuck in arrested development

Where the death lobby is a sacred cow

Capitalism is the ultimate good

For Gods’ chosen people

Profit uber alles!

This is Amerika:

Where we treasure the freedom to wield our weapons

More than the lives of our children.

This is Amerika:

Where we are afraid to choose

Lest we offend.

This is Amerika:

Where hate is free speech

And tools of murder revered!

This is Amerika…

I want my money back.

I know you probably wrote this in a hot rage of righteous indignation, but the ignorance and sense of throwing babies out with bathwater here is overwhelming, You’ll read this back in a few months time and be embarrassed by it, I am sure.

    • Wrong. This is how I feel from the bottom of my heart. It is nothing new. I have felt this way for decades. True, the intensity of the feelings have deepened, but I am NOT proud of my country buzzug: I am ashamed. And I do not support Market capitalism: I am for Socialist Democracy in America. I imagine that’s a pretty alien way of thinking to you, if you feel I am throwing the baby out with the bathwater. But guess what? I STAND BEHIND EVERY (ANGRY) SYLLABLE of this poem. I get that you disagree. So be it.
