“The American Sleep” (a poem by KPKeelan)

All across this land, feeling safe

under heavy blankets of reassuring illusion,

millions sleep

the American Sleep,

from sea to shining sea!

In this nightly ritual of drifting away,

they welcome the narcotic refuge

of mindlessness.

It’s a dreamless time,

a temporary coma of welcome relief.

The ceaseless burden

of collective amnesia

grows a heavy weight by day.

Slaves to an exoskeleton

that defines us against our will,

we stagger under

the invisible weight

of our own cognitive dissonance,

exhausted by willful denial.

The Truth is too gigantic,

too unrelenting

for a human eyeball to stare down.

Choosing wishful thinking over confrontation

we drift willingly

into this nightly Sleep of Lies.
So seductive! this sarcophagus of detachment,

we pop poison sleeping pills like sugary candy

to lie in wait for healing oblivion.

It’s a Conspiracy of Silence,

crouched in the gentle snoring

of the American Sleep.
