GUESTBOOK 167 (2015): “Catholic Girls and Monsters” (by Diane Morinich)

Diane

Little girl walking-
Shaking as she approached
First Communion

Souls must be pure white
She trembled with fear of God
Thinking she sinned

Her soul-surely black
A veil tightened her neck
Little girl scared

Confession-priest
She felt like she was lying
Little girl adrift

At the age of four
The monster came and took her
And kept coming back

Silence was the rule
Confession ambiguous
She had not sinned

The family so proud
Of the little girl in white
She only saw black

That was the day
She began the spiral down
Little girl of despair
