2013 GUESTBOOK 117: “Islands” (lyrics by Peter Sinfield)

There is a certain plaintive song, from a seventies-era prog-rock band that is much better known for intense major chord bombast and eye-bleeding intensity than slow, emotional ballads. (Think of their early signature piece: “21st Century Schizoid Man”!)  But I’ve been a stressed puppy this year.  I love King Crimson when they rock their brains out, but I needed the soothing strains of this calm-inducing love letter to the Italian island of Sardinia.  I needed it so much, it played it again and again in a repetition approximating a mantra.  I think I have developed some strong neural pathways that merge this ode to nature with my unconscious mind.  For the rest of my life, when I need to go to my “happy place”, I will now know where to go.

Earth, stream and treeFrom air
encircled by sea
waves sweep the sand

from my island.

 .

sunriseMy sunsets fade
field and glade
wait only for rain
grain after grain
love erodes my

high weathered walls walls
which fend off the tide
Cradle the wind

to my island.

GullsGaunt granite climbs
where gulls wheel and glide
Mournfully cry

o’er my island.

My dawn bride’s veil, Dew
damp and pale,
dissolves in the sun.

Love’s web is spun-
cats prowl, mice run.

snatch-hand briars,Briars

where owls know my eyes

touch my island,
touch me.

Beach Cove.

Beneath the wind turned wave
infinite peace.
Islands join hands
‘neath heaven’s sea.

Dark harbour quays quay
like fingers of stone
hungrily reach
from my island.

pearls and gourds
are strewn on my shore
equal in love,

bound in circles.

Earth, stream and tree,
return to the sea.
Waves sweep the sand,
from my island,
from me.

For me that was the worst King Crimson song of all time. I stopped buying their ablums after that song. Much prefer “I am a rock” S & G.

    • Wow- you have to rain on my parade, huh? Well, to each their own. I LOVE Mel Collins saxophone work on this track and if you stopped listening to King Crimson back then friend you MISSED OUT on at least one of the greatest progressive rock albums of all time: DISCIPLINE. You are only shortchanging yourself with this attitude.
