2013 GUESTBOOK 109: “The First Coat” (by Shannon Vance)

.

I’m chipping away all this old paint,

many layers from many owners-

just trying to get down to the first coat.

I’ll be the first to admit

I put on a couple myself,

but I took them off as well

just hours ago.

And now my curiosity, unbridled

has my fingers moving fast

just trying to get down to the first coat.

Tell me who you are

thing of mystery!
Show me where you’ve been.

Your lineage is recorded in layers

like the bottom of the sea

and I’m playing geologist with my scraper,

sandpaper,

and foul-smelling buckets

of brown and sticky paint remover.

When I get to the bottom of this

I’ll strip you naked,

set you outside for a while

where all the world can see-

then will you be willing to

talk to me?

.
