FLIX PIX (72): “GEORGE HARRISON: Living in the Material World”

George Harrison

(directed by Martin Scorsese, 2011)

****+ (out of 5)

> Marty Scorsese’s fantastic rock doc about the man frequently called “the spiritual Beatle” or “the quiet one”, rocks the universe.

. Vivid testimony is given by luminaries Klaus Voorman, Terry Gilliam, Eric Idle, Ringo Star, Paul McCartney, Yoko Ono, George Martin, Eric Clapton, Tom Petty, Phil Spector and of course, from George himself.  Exhaustive but never exhausting, LIVING IN THE MATERIAL WORLD comes in two parts and runs 3 hours and 47 minutes- and every frame is amazing.  There is so much great footage here that I had never seen- and I was a Beatles baby! There is heavy coverage of the psychedelic years: the LSD, followed by the meditation and influence of Ravi Shankar that is very enlightening about what made this thoughtful troubadour tick.  One of the cinema’s deftest directors provides great visuals coupled with deep insight- and it’s all crammed with killer music that will live on through the ages though George is gone.

. After seeing the sniping and bitterness of the film LET IT BE, it’s heartening to hear the ex-Beatles speaking kindly and lovingly of one another here.  It puts a sweet aftertaste on the bitterness of their very public parting.  I was so saddened when George Harrison died, because by example, the man was a spiritual teacher for me.  He explored the depths of his soul, and figured out who he was.  Now I fully know why I felt so inspired by him.

> This film is a breathtaking homage to the life this beacon of light led.   We of the world love you George.  You showed us how to live, and the art of dying.  It is our highest hope that you are now playing celestial music with your sweet lord.
