Poems of a Young Man: “Post-Mortem For a Cricket” (a poem by KPKeelan)

.

The walls of this house

are hollow

and inhabited by an unseen population

of singing insects.

Today,

sister crushed a cricket.

It was an innocent accident.

She was trying to extradite the tiny fellow

from the house

and return him to his outdoor home.

It made her so sad.

She only meant to help…

Still,

its survivors

chirp for me

with lusty abandon.

Rubbing their tiny legs together

they sing in chorus:

“We are still alive!”,

and chirping madly.

.

 (with forgiveness to Beth)
