“Six Below Zero” (for Kelly Sue Keelan) (© KPKeelan)

young Kelly.

At 6 below zero

the world is as cold as my pain.

She’s gone. Gone.

And the world lumbers on

in a torrent of tears

that will not stop.

I am stabbed? Stabbed!

Can this be real? Real!

Is she gone forever? Gone!

Have I ever been

in this otherworldly world below zero?

It’s so COLD

and we are so alone.

Are we only pillars of dust?

Congregations of material goods?

Temporary flesh,

pillars of dust.

Blind grasping at emptiness

a handful of nothing.

Yes it is real. REAL. And we,

who shed that waterfall

from so vast an untapped reservoir,

will live on-

(for some time)

without that flower

that flesh, that pillar.

A brood that once was six

is down to five.

First there is darkness and then there is dust and then there is dawn-

and we go on-

(zero be damned!)

In the flesh, in the spirit

and beyond the flesh.

At six below zero

it can only get warmer.
