Poems of a Young Man: “Progress Report” (for Stuart) (© KPKeelan)

In a strange way

I’ve grown up with you

and watched

the mirror of you

grow up

reflecting me.

And I’ve watched you watch me-

and watched you watch me watching you…

I’ve tested

and been tested by you.

I’ve weighed and measured

every shared day,

and I’ve seen you too

make your

calculations, speculations, inquisitions.

And in another strange way,

we’ve died together

and each delivered, for posterity

the other’s heartfelt eulogies.

Mourned, united

and birthed

and bred

and spread the gospel of youth

with each fingerprint we left behind.

And then, beyond all this

we have been reborn together

and drifted            apart…

watching the distances grow,

Reaching over the sometimes turbulent waters

to touch fingertips

from one solo vessel to another

afloat, aloft, adrift

and together
