Poems of a Young Man: “Judicial Mockery” (© KPKeelan)

.

Powerful gavel in fallible hand,

he is the clumsy instrument

of imperfect equity.

HEAR YE, HEAR YE!

OYEZ. OYEZ.

COURT IS NOW IN SESSION.

He tests he tastes he tries he judges

as though

there were such a thing as justice.

He weighs he measures he listens he talks

and without “taking” a decision

his court is adjourned.

Hair-trigger reporters spring into action

in a scrambling melee for the door-

each, anxious to be the first

to STOP THE PRESSES!

All over the city,

revised headlines blared:

NOTHING RESOLVED!
