GUESTBOOK 146 (2015): “Riding the Caboose” (by Shannon Vance)

a freelance freight train,

wishing I was aboard the caboose.

A paintbrush in my suntanned hand

I project myself

inside my painting.

I can hear the locomotive

100 cars away.

I can feel the rhythmic movement.

I smell the redwoods

from the open window

as I smooth out

and unwind

an overworked mind.

For moments, I am aboard that train

and then

I am the painter again.
