“The Lie of Appearances” (a poem by KPKeelan)

.

The True Nature of things

is there-

hidden

just below reflecting surfaces

in which we see

only ourselves.

Weak human eyes

cannot focus

on this obscured plane,

the focal point

where all things converge-

reporting only mirage,

the patina of appearances

dazzling the lazy retina

with diversion,

the clash of possibilities

creating contrast,

like oil in water

separating into component colors

in a dazzling display

of incongruity.

It’s so easy

to mistake

these pretty swirling patterns

for the wake left

in the passing of our DNA,

so easy co confuse

this pretty, shiny edifice

for the substance of us

when the act of revealing

is the act of obscuring.
