2013 GUESTBOOK 99: “The Little Kitty” (by John Martinez)

John M.

The little kitty walked onto

The 10 Freeway that day,

With no kitty litter

On his bottom,

No canned cat food

On his chop’s,

No collar on his neck;

He must have been

Born in the bush

On the side of the freeway,

Or crawled from a hole,

Or just popped

Out of nowhere,

Bellyplump with

A field mouse,

Eyes magical,

Infinitely hazel

With the morning

Sun still on our backs,

A picture of LA, framed

In our windshields,

All 10,000 of our cars,

A chain beginning

In San Bernardino

And sweeping around

Past Forest Lawn,

All eastbound traffic

Came to a stop,

When the kitty bounced

His little kitty legs,

Two white twigs

With golden paws

And the pastel sky,

Burdened by the weight

Of the universe

Sighed with love,

The clouds, calculating

Combustion and steam,

Rolled into complete

White and grey smiles,

While we all sat there,

Crunched in our

Bucket seats,

With our clocks ticking,

Our I-Pods,

Our navigations running,

We all stopped to wait

For the little kitty,

To trot across the freeway,

His small snout poking

Into the air,

Like he was the only

Thing free on earth,

And he was.

John Martinez writes poetry. Sometimes, he gets one right. He studied poetry at Fresno State University…attending Advance Poetry Writing with Philip Levine for four years. He also took a class in Bone-Head English. For the last 15 years he has worked as an Administrator for a well known Law Firm in Los Angeles. Before this he was an investigator and before that… well, he was homeless.Mr. Martinez believes in a lot of things, but mainly John believes in the power of being human; that spirits rise from being human and NOT the other way around. John believes in God. He would like his poetry to be read by as many people as possible, but on the other hand, he would like, one day, to understand his own poems and why he must write them. (Karl adds that he is a rippin’ guitar player!)
