Poems of a Young Man: “Building Better” (© KPKeelan)

as always

to build my better mousetrap,

life forges on nonetheless.

The morning hours

lace us with sleepy resolve.

Let’s do better today.

We might as well-

it takes so much energy

to improve upon anything.

Friends wave

so long until when.

They are off down their highways

to set their own mousetraps,

and cluster across the globe

waiting to be sprung.

My own trap

doesn’t know what its set to snare,

but the spring is coiled.

The latch is set.

The bait awaits.

Great! I’m just trying to keep my present mousetrap from falling apart; I should have built a better one long ago. Anne
