Poems of a Young Man: “Mr. Listmaker Gets Writer’s Cramp” (© KPKeelan)

(a pathetic tragicomedy)

Mean, Mean Mr. Listmaker

locking chains

by making lists.

Packaging the future,

refurbishing the past.

Pinning it on the bulletin board

in 1- 2- 3 and A- B- C.

Single items scribbled out

in staggered rows

and groups and bunches-

in files of files of files.

See him burn the midnight oil,

hunched like a corpse over his work-

pencil in hand

scribbling and grinning,

grinning and scribbling.

Poor, poor Mr. Listmaker

tied to his lists and never free

but grinning!

Grinning stupidly, he is a happy, happy man,

As long as he has a box to check!
