GUESTBOOK (2012) 57: “Laughing in America” (by John Martinez)

John M.

And so, laugh,

Laugh at everything.

There is no time

To do otherwise

But know that the sweet

Pond of your innards

Will be sucked into the trees,

Into the grass root

But today, laugh.

Laugh as if there was

No sadness,

Laugh, as if death

was a dream

And reach out,

Like a muscular ray of sun,

Reach out to the magic

Of the young,

They carry an image of you,

Your voice, a beautiful echo

Napping in their ears.

They will bring you

Out of the walls

One day,

When the wind

Is like it is now,

When the sound of birds

Sing this exact song,

Yes, it will be a day

That never ends.

Laugh as if there was

No hunger in the world,

As if, there was no injustice,

Yes, you have to forget

What is real

To truly laugh,

Even if your laugh is a lie,

Please, laugh.

Laugh in the bath,

Immersed in gallons of water,

Laugh near the stove

Cooking, endless

Amounts of food, laugh

With Jazz playing, softly,

In your air-conditioned vacuum

Behind tinted glass.

Laugh, because its your

Right to laugh.

Laugh at everything.

There is no time

To do otherwise.

(© John Martinez, 2012)

John Martinez writes poetry. Sometimes, he gets one right. He studied poetry at Fresno State University…attending Advance Poetry Writing with Philip Levine for four years. He also took a class in Bone-Head English. For the last 15 years he has worked as an Administrator for a well known Law Firm in Los Angeles. Before this he was an investigator and before that… well, he was homeless.Mr. Martinez believes in a lot of things, but mainly John believes in the power of being human; that spirits rise from being human and NOT the other way around. John believes in God. He would like his poetry to be read by as many people as possible, but on the other hand, he would like, one day, to understand his own poems and why he must write them. (Karl adds that he is a rippin’ guitar player!)

  1. says:

Kevin, I really like this poem. It’s not lyrical, not sophisticated, but very real. Who is this John Martinez?

  2. John is the cousin of my pal Karl Lopez. Last Saturday, I produced a poetry reading with myself, John and his brother Abel , with Karl sounding good on guitar. (THREE BROTHERS: TWO MOTHERS) John came all the way from L.A. He was amazing. (We all were.) I’ll be publishing a lot of his work here!
