Poems of a Young Man: “The Last Smogset of 1978” (© KPKeelan)

.

Up we go!

Into the hills

on a pilgrimage to observe

the last sunset of the year.

1979 here we come.

Lazily, we lollygag

in the tall, fragrant

sea of grass,

watching time unfold.

Nearby

a man and his baby giggle

each delighting in the other’s wonder

in beholding the other.

Life is good.

A cop car creeps slowly by

patrolling the perimeter of

the Getty oil fields.

The evening chill descends

in the San Fernando valley,

as the last smogset of 1978

recedes into:

Starlight, star bright

first star I see on this cool, clear New Year’s night

I wish you may, I wish you might

grant this wish I wish tonight!

I am ready now.
