“After We Die” (for Stuart & Lily) (a poem by KPKeelan)

Where do they go

these gems of memory;

these pearls of thought-

when our short time is over?

They are so huge to us!

So monumental these tiny tribulations-

they are everything! They are

Such drama a human is!

Always a matter of life and death!

Where does identity go

when we are gone?

What happens to all that fury of feeling?

Where do the monsoons of love flood

once freed from the reservoir who held it?

When the body is gone

do we become one among a multitude of ghosts

thronging ever unseen around the living

trying to tell them

through sealed lips

that the love goes on?

Or is there just darkness and void,

a freedom from ego and attachment

in an instant of crossing over

like a flickering candle

burning one instant-

fire and flame!

And snuffed out the next?

I don’t know.

Let’s wait and see.
